Wei Ya is a traditional Chinese festival which originated from the ceremony to worship Tu Di Gong(the Earth God). The Hokkien Chinese worship the Earth God on every second and sixteenth day of every lunar month; this is called "Zhuo Ya"("Zhor Geh" in Hokkien). The second day of the second lunar month’s Zhuo Ya is the first of the year, thus it is called "Tou Ya"("Tao Geh" in Hokkien). The sixteenth day of the twelfth lunar month is the last Zhuo Ya of the year, thus it is called "Wei Ya"("Boey Geh" in Hokkien). After the Zhuo Ya worship, a feast called the "Da Ya Ji" which includes the dishes used for offering is organised.

Every year end, Chinese companies will show their appreciation for their employees’ hard work by having company Wei Ya dinners. Now, Wei Ya dinners have evolved into annual parties or annual dinners for the employees to both celebrate and network.
