谢灶或祭灶，这一民俗活动可追溯到先秦时期(即是公元前221年之前)。农历十二月廿三或廿四日祭灶，是日入夜后要把灶台刷干净，然后摆置供品有糖果、米果、年糕等，烧香、点烛送灶君回天宫。除夕当天早上，则要重新迎请灶神祥降归位，然后才开始准备除夕的年夜饭。后来谢灶祭祀活动演变成民间送神习俗，也就是不止送灶君而是送所供奉的诸神回天宫，然后在大年初四迎接诸神祥降归位。
谢太岁也称还太岁、送太岁，是感谢值年太岁一年来的庇佑。冬至后立春(2023癸卯年的立春落在大年十四即阳历2月4号)前皆可谢太岁。
After the Wei Ya dinner, it is time to thank and send off the Kitchen God. This folk custom can be traced back to as early as the pre-Qin era (earlier than BCE 221). On the 23rd or 24th of the lunar calendar, the kitchen must be cleaned after evening. The ritual to thank and send off the Kitchen God to the Tian Gong (Heaven Palace) uses incense, candles and offerings such as candies, rice crackers, rice cakes which are placed in front of the Kitchen God. On the early morning of Chinese New Year Eve, the Kitchen God will be welcomed back again before preparing for the Chinese New Year Eve reunion dinner. The ritual to thank and send off the Kitchen God has evolved into a custom of sending off deities, and then welcoming them back on the 4th day of Chinese New Year.
