“Twa Peh Kong” also known as “Hock Teik Cheng Sin” in Hokkien (Da Bo Gong or Fu De Zheng Shen in Mandarin), the God of the Land or the God of the Earth, is one of the most popular Chinese Gods in Penang. Most of the old Penangite Chinese families enshrine Twa Peh Kong to receive blessings for safety, harmony, wealth and good health. Since ancient times, the Chinese believe that the land not only allows the growing of grains to feed human beings, it also nourishes all living things on earth, so we must always be grateful to the land.
In Malaysia, there are many temples, cemeteries, ancestral halls, associations, homes, shops and factories enshrining Twa Peh Kong. Different areas or different buildings will have their own God of the Land. Twa Peh Kong, Tu Di Gong, Di Zhu Gong, Hou Tu are all Gods of the Land with similar functionalities but with different ranking. The 2nd Day of Month 2 and 15th Day of Month 8 of the Chinese Lunar calendar are the feast days of Twa Peh Kong.
